How the digital landscape is changing in response to COVID-19

As we all know this time has been extremely difficult for everyone in so many different aspects of life. No matter what each and every one of our lives has shifted from life as we know it every single day to a new routine and schedule that we are not familiar with in any way shape or form. As we have made the transition from in-person meetings, concerts, hangouts, sporting events, seeing friends, going to restaurants, attending a fitness class and much more we have completely shifted to an online environment. 

The thing that has been quite amazing is seeing how all of these different areas of our lives have been able to adapt to an online presence only. We now are able to execute Zoom to have meetings or even hangout with friends. We can take online live workout classes or saved videos. People are live streaming DJ sets in Miami beach from their balcony to make it feel as if you are in person at a concert. Leaders are giving live talks and hosting other important people alongside them. New digital series are popping up everywhere and life as we once knew it is not that anymore.

Let’s take a deeper look at what some brands have been doing to keep the momentum going! 

Free workouts from Nike, Pelotón and countless other fitness brands are keeping you active during your quarantine. The global interactive fitness industry was already expected to grow by $5.44 billion between 2020 and 2024, even before the coronavirus pandemic closed many businesses (including gyms) and forced millions of Americans to work from home — if they have been lucky enough to keep their jobs.

And now millions of people are looking for ways to also work out from home. Online orders for fitness equipment such as kettlebells, dumbbells and treadmills saw a 55% boost in the week spanning March 11–15 compared to the 10 days before. 

So gym chains such as Planet Fitness PLNT, -0.85% have been jumping on the home sweat sessions bandwagon — such as streaming free exercise classes on Facebook FB, -0.78% or Google-owned GOOG, -0.66% YouTube.

The good news for consumers: Most of these workouts are free for the time being, with boutique fitness brands extending their free trial periods or waiving their fees entirely while many countries including the U.S. call on residents to shelter in place or quarantine themselves.

At home concerts from musicians have reached an all-time high as well. Ever since the coronavirus outbreak began, artists have been putting on live, at-home performances for fans who are self-isolating, and they’re quite the joy to witness. Coldplay frontman Chris Martin seemingly kick-started the trend on March 16 when he launched a new virtual concert series dubbed Together At Home: Who-Global Citizen Solidarity Sessions in partnership with the World Health Organization and Global Citizen.

Since then, plenty of other artists have followed suit and shared their own mini-concert videos on social media, both associated with the Together At Home series and not. Charlie Puth, John Legend, Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello, Hozier, and Jennifer Hudson are just a few of the big names who’ve gotten in on the action, and we expect even more to catch on and do the same.
